New Migraine Gun . . . Could Mean Medication-less Relief for Many Migraine Sufferers

For the past 8-9 years there has been work on a gun that can stop a migraine in its tracks. It is a long story how this idea came about.  But in summary, it is a gun that shoots a powerful magnetic wave through the brain, which can stop some types of migraines.

Migraine with aura, is a type of migraine that is usually preceded by neurological symptoms. The most typical of these are vision disturbance but can be numbness or other symptoms. We know for a fact how these symptoms are produced, through what we call spreading-cortical depression (SCD).  This is a wave, like throwing a stone in a pond, that goes out across the brain in all directions from a central point. It moves across the brain at about 3 mm per minute.

We also know for a fact how the brain responds to this electrical wave . . . by turning on the headache generator in the brainstem thus causing a headache.

It was found (something by accident) that when you blast this wave in its beginning, you can actually halt it and thus interrupting the process that will lead to actual pain.  This gun has not been approved by the FDA yet, but should be within the next 12 months.

Here are the pros and cons.

Pros: It doesn’t involve any medication, is immediately effective and has few side effects.

Cons: It only works if you migraine with aura and your aura comes on before the headache.  It will cost about $600-$800 when it is available, however, that could pay for itself in a matter of a few months.  The last con, in my opinion, is that we really don’t know the consequences of repetitive blasting of the brain with powerful magnetic waves for years.  We do know that when hundreds of patients used the gun for months there were virtually no side effects.  For more see the video below.
